Favouring a disunited Kingdom? How negative perceptions of the EU-referendum relate to individual mobility and collective action considerations

One consequence of the EU-referendum’s pro-Brexit outcome was a renewed call for Scottish independence. Supporting this can be construed as form collective action Scots may engage in. However, also consider individual mobility strategies including - in extreme cases emigration. The current research investigated how identity-dynamics relate to these identity management post-referendum Scotland. We found positive association between perceiving EU-referendum having violated expectations and considering responses, mediated by subversion (i.e., perception that referendum results fundamentally changed UK’s identity). Furthermore, we related higher intentions, disidentification from UK citizens. Taken together, findings underscore pervasive role social processes play shaping political decisions behaviour.
